- Musty Suffer is a door-to-door book salesman who tells a sob story in order to become employed as a hired hand by a farmer to whom he had unsuccessfully tried to sell books. Musty is given an attic room with a low ceiling where he has trouble shaving; his duties include taking the dead dog's place and watching the chickens. The farmer finally runs Musty off the farm, after forgiving Musty for kicking a hole in the ceiling, when he discovers that Musty has taken his coins and planted them in a field in order to grow a money tree.
