Summary

Gervane de Paula (Cuiabá, Mato Grosso, 1961) is an artist who produces in different languages and supports, working with painting, sculpture, art objects and installations. His work has a deep relationship with ecosystems and experience in the region in which he lives. The "cerrado" (tropical savanna), the rainforest and the "pantanal" (floodplain) are topics of reflection in his production. Scenes from everyday life and works of a critical nature also permeate Gervane's work. This is Gervane de Paula's first solo show at an institution in São Paulo presenting the art production of the artist's 40-year career, which questions the sociopolitical problems of the Brazilian Midwest. His early paintings, self-portraits and critical works on the experience of life in Mato Grosso are included in the exhibition. Works such as "Mapa", from 2016 and "Pantera negra", from 2023, can be seen for the first time. In the exhibition, scenes from Cuiabá and the artist's first paintings can be seen by the public in works that cover the period from 1979 to 1983. The Araés neighborhood, where Gervane's studio is located, is represented in images of conviviality and celebration. In addition, scenes with mango and cashew trees and paintings that depict fishing and mining are present.
