Summary

""This book is a collection of talks, articles, and essays about Vipassana meditation. Writing them has been a prominent part of my life for decades, but increasingly so since I retired from practicing psychiatry. I found more time to fulfill the agenda that Mr. S.N. Goenka had placed upon my shoulders, to explain Vipassana in a manner that could be appreciated by audiences at colleges, universities, and similar institutions. He assigned me to create an understanding of Vipassana based upon rational, scientific, and social scientific thinking. "Most of the public talks were based upon written essays, and many people have already heard or read one or two of them, because they have appeared online as written texts, audio files, or transcripts of talks. The chapters in this book, however, are newly revised and often are compounds, integrating two similar talks, changing the talk into an essay, or otherwise amending existing material for compilation and readability in a single volume. There are audio files of talks that I gave that may have similar titles to some of the chapters in this book, but are in fact somewhat different. Some of the chapters read as essays, while others have the spoken language feeling of talks. "Each chapter is intended to stand on its own, so that many passages about the essence of Vipassana repeat. The book is better understood as a compilation, rather than as a sequence that needs to be read in order. "This book is not intended to 'sell' Vipassana, but to explain it in a manner that allows readers to experience an enthusiasm for its benefits, coupled to a realistic assessment of its probable value for them. For many people who first heard these chapters when they were public talks, or Old Student talks, they opened a door into a better world. For me, standing in front of audiences across the years, looking into the eyes of an estimated twenty to twenty-five thousand people, I was awakened to the realization of how important knowledge of Vipassana could be to a vast community of eager participants. Vipassana provides something anchoring, inspiring, and what many people want. "My words contain the observations of a long-time participant-observer, and are not an official statement of any organization." -Paul R. Fleischman"-- Provided by publisher.
